OUCH THAT HURTS – ROOT CAUSES OF DENTINAL HYPERSENSITIVITY

Anne Guignon RDH, MPH, CSP

Sensitivity Series: Part 1

Dentinal hypersensitivity is increasing in prevalence and creates enormous clinical challenges and quality-of-life issues for those who suffer from this condition. Dentinal hypersensitivity is the direct outcome of acid erosion on exposed dentin. A complex range of risk factors increases the risk for developing this painful condition.

This course addresses the physiological nature of dentinal hypersensitivity and how to uncover cases of hidden hypersensitivity. Clinicians will learn about dentinal hypersensitivity from the perspective of “who and the why” and receive information that sets the stage for achieving optimal clinical outcomes and helping patients get relief from this painful condition.

Participants will

  • Understand the clinical signs and symptoms of dentinal hypersensitivity and how to differentiate dentinal hypersensitivity from other oral conditions and pathologies.
  • Appreciate how gingival recession, erosive tooth wear, and tooth abrasion set the biological stage for dentinal hypersensitivity.
  • Learn about the role of pH and titratable acidity in the development of dentinal hypersensitivity and how dietary patterns and behaviors, beverage intake patterns, medications, supplements, and remedies each contribute to tooth erosion.
