Prof. Paula Moynihan

The webinar will cover an overview of the most recent evidence pertaining to intake of sugars and risk of dental caries and other non-communicable diseases.

It will include information on the recommended thresholds for sugars intake and an overview of both upstream, and downstream approaches to reducing intake, including dietary advice in the dental practice. Information on the classification of sugars for health purposes, the relative importance of reducing amount consumed versus reducing the frequency of intake, and different dietary sources of sugars, such as fruits and milk will be discussed. The main dietary messages to deliver to patients will be presented.

THE SPEAKER

Prof.Paula Moynihan

Paula Moynihan is Professor of Nutrition and Oral Health and Director of the Centre for Oral Health Research at Newcastle University UK. She also is Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Nutrition and Oral Health at Newcastle University. Her research interests include the interrelationship between nutrition and oral health throughout the life course, and dietary intervention in older adults. Being Expert advisor, on carbohydrates and dental health, to the WHO Nutrition Guideline Advisory Group, she led the WHO commissioned systematic review of evidence relating to amount of sugars and dental caries that has informed WHO guidelines on dietary sugars. She is also a member of the European Food Safety Authority Working Group on Added Sugars. Professor Moynihan is the Vice President of IADR and will take up this position of President Elect in July this year. She is currently President of the Geriatric Oral Research Group and a Past President of the Nutrition Research Group of IADR. In 2004 she was awarded the UK Nutrition Society’s Silver Medal for ‘Excellence in Research by a Young Scientist’. In 2010 she was awarded an IADR Distinguished Scientist Award for ‘Geriatric Oral Research’. Professor Moynihan has over 115 publications in peer reviewed journals, several book chapters and is on the editorial board for several scientific journals, including the Journal of Dental Research. She has presented her research at national and international conferences across the globe. Her current research includes an evaluation of Public Health England’s Sugar Smart Health Marketing Campaign which aims to reduce sugars intake by children.
